What is the difference between encodeURI and encodeURIComponent?

encodeURI leaves characters like / : ? & untouched because they are meaningful in a full URL, while encodeURIComponent escapes them — use encodeURIComponent for a single query value and encodeURI for a whole URL.

Why would I need plus-for-space encoding?

Traditional HTML form submissions (application/x-www-form-urlencoded) encode spaces as + rather than %20 — use that mode when reproducing a form POST.
